A world leader in subsea pipeline protection

Concrete Protective and Support Structures

In an offshore environment there is always the possibility of unseen damage occurring to subsea installations through trawl board strike, as well as accidental dropping from platforms or vessels. A variety of hard objects including scaffold poles, drill collars, pumps, valves and even whole containers are known to have been lost, and the consequences of an unexpected impact on a subsea structure or pipeline could be catastrophic. Concrete provides an excellent medium to resist the effects of subsea impact and we therefore design and manufacture a range of concrete protective structures, which are tailored to site-specific conditions.

Impact Protection Covers

The covers are designed to a Pipeshield advised or client specified requirement by ensuring that the thickness and quality of the concrete resists either one off or multiple strikes. The concrete is assessed for both penetration and back face scabbing to ensure that any object cannot impact the installation or pipeline. Installation is normally by direct lift on slings designed to meet offshore lifting standards requirement such as DnV Rules for Planning and Execution of Marine Operations.

Pipeline Supports

With the network of pipelines and cables becoming more and more complex many pipelines have to cross over other operators' surface laid installations. There is often a legislative requirement to provide a minimum separation distance between pipelines and therefore any pipeline crossing needs to be lifted off the seabed as it passes over the existing pipeline or cable. Pipeshield provides bespoke systems that can consist of mattresses, rigid bearing units or bridges to guide and support the cross-over. The keys to a quality Pipeshield pipeline support system are:

  • Safe bearing pressures on the soil.
  • Adequate target width for the pipeline, cable or umbilical.
  • Acceptable profile of the ramp and cross over.
  • Necessary protection for the existing installation.

Bespoke Solutions

We are frequently asked to design and manufacture specific concrete protection structures to meet bespoke needs. These include:

  • Deflector blocks
  • Weighting clamps
  • Anchor blocks
  • Weighting systems
  • Thermal blankets
