Concrete Blankets & Mattresses

We design and manufacture products formed of linked concrete blocks that can be used as over-blankets and under-mattresses to stabilise and protect subsea pipelines and cables. These products fall into the following groups:

Bi-Flex Blankets / Mattresses

Our most popular product consists of hexagonal cross sectional mass concrete blocks linked together in two directions to provide a flexible unit capable of supporting or being draped over pipelines and cables to form a compliant yet highly resistant protection and stabilisation system. These are manufactured in three standard thicknesses, 150mm, 300mm and 450mm. They can be manufactured in virtually any size up to 12 m x 4 m depending on requirements and in any density from lightweight aggregate concrete to heavy density aggregate (up to 4.8 T/m 3 ). Pipeshield blankets incorporate the stretcher bond jointing arrangement to enhance the roll up resistance lengthwise. The blocks are also sized to provide an enhanced weight per square metre over other designs.

Bi-Flex Blankets / Mattresses

N2 High Performance Blanket (Patent No.00 11960.2 &00 22311.5)

As an enhancement to the Bi-flex system, these blankets incorporate a specially designed edge block that can be fitted either to two or to four sides of the blanket. This Nose and Notch (N2) edge block has been designed to enhance the edge lift stability of the blanket in a variety of environmental conditions, so as to prevent sudden premature failure by 'roll-up' of the blanket.

High Performance Blanket

Whilst global failure is also an important criterion in high velocity conditions, any lift of the edge will lead to sudden failure. The Nose and Notch (N2) patented design minimizes edge lift and in beneficial conditions can be seen to provide positive downforce on the block due to the hydrodynamic properties provided by the block profile.

Flume test trials have shown that the enhancement over a standard block profile is considerable, with the resultant effect that edge lift is never critical to the limiting stability of the blanket.

Uni-Flex Blankets / Mattresses

These are heavy duty units consisting of rigid reinforced concrete hexagonal "logs", usually 450 or 600 mm deep, tied together with heavy duty polypropylene rope to provide overweight and protection systems for pipelines. These are used where a high integrity of stability is required, either because the blankets have to resist pipeline forces or where the environmental conditions are particularly severe. All our concrete blankets and mattresses are installed using a proprietary lifting frame, with quick release strops fastened by looping through the polypropylene rope loops that project from the edges of the blankets. Uni-flex blankets can also be lifted utilising additional loops inserted into the top of the log sections.

Anti-Scour Mats

In fast running waters with granular soils excessive scour can create serious structural or operation problems. Where our Scour Prediction Analysis indicates the need, we can supply anti-scour frond mats. Being buoyant, the fronds interrupt the flow of the near bottom current to lower its velocity, causing any transitional sediment to drop and build up a sediment bank.

Bi-Flex Combined Concrete/ Frond Blanket

These are an enhanced version, made to our own design. Each row of fronds is connected directly to a concrete blanket, thereby providing immediate stability to the pipeline whilst also providing a long lasting anti-scour system. No anchoring is required, permitting rapid deployment of the system.
